Genesis 10: 25: And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan.
Peleg lived after the Flood and was of the fourth generation of children after Noah. The Bible makes special mention of Peleg, stating that the earth was divided in the days when he lived. The very name of Peleg actually means “Division” in the Hebrew language, for his name and its meaning was a reflection of the condition of the world at that time.
It was the tremendous convulsions to the planet during the Flood that caused the landmass to rise and sink, whilst the oceans rushed in to fill the low spaces. Places such as Atlantis and its secrets were lost beneath the waves, having become deeply submerged below the ocean’s surface, and the world was divided into continents and islands, with the vast oceans between them.
This was the new world that Peleg lived in after the Flood, a world divided into continents and islands. The supercontinent that existed beforehand was now gone, having been broken up by violent tectonic movement as earth’s surface was rapidly reshaped. But the days of Peleg are also when Babel and its tower were constructed, followed by the confusion of languages and the scattering of the people throughout the new world (Genesis 11: 1 – 9). This great division of the world by their families, tongues, and nations is largely what the Bible is speaking about in referencing the name of Peleg (Genesis 10: 32: These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.)
