In the Old Testament, God gave Israel a sacrificial system of sin offerings, trespass offerings, burnt offerings, and peace offerings. God also gave Israel very specific requirements concerning their diet, as to what was considered unclean, and not to be eaten, and what was considered clean, and could therefore be eaten. Added to all of this was the moral laws that God gave Israel, concerning marriage and divorce, fornication, adultery, bestiality and homosexuality.
Upon reaching the New Testament, we find that the entire sacrificial system was fulfilled in the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ, once offered on the cross for all who will receive it. The strict dietary rules that Israel abided by were also done away with after Calvary; this was made especially clear in Peter’s threefold vision of Acts 10: 9 – 16, wherein a great sheet was lowered to the earth filled with all manner of beasts, and a Voice saying, “What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.”
But what God did not abolish was the moral laws. Jesus spoke on these throughout His public ministry, of how God views the sacredness of marriage, and the punishment that will befall those who defile their bodies with all manner of sexual sin (Revelation 22: 15). The Word of God still holds true in these matters, and although we live in this age of immorality and the glorification of sex, God will surely punish with severity those who have willfully trampled over His Word to satisfy their fleshly lusts.
